Four new Alpiner 4 models are arriving
News from Switzerland once again: Alpina launches a range of automatic ‘Alpina 4’ watches AND a new GMT ‘Business Timer’. Isn’t that cool? Well, we are about to find out. Alpina is usually known for their sporty timepieces. Being a brand that was into sports watches from the beginning, the origin of the ‘Alpina 4’ series isn’t really surprising.

If you’re fan of Alpina, you probably already know what the ‘4’ in that particular series stands for. If you don’t, let me explain. Sports watches often know a rough lifestyle. A lot of movement, shocks and strange torque are what a sports watch has to endure in its active life. Alpina, being the leader when it comes to the concept ‘Swiss sports watch’, had to come up with some kind of solution that would solve all these ‘problems’. After all, the technique hiding behind a dial is fairly fragile and not really made for rough use. So, Alpina came up with the 4 most important aspects needed for a sports watch to function properly.

Anti-magnetic, anti-shock, waterproof and stainless would be the pillars of the new ‘Alpina 4’ series. Aspects that – if applied properly – would be very important for creating the ultimate sports watch. Since Alpina had a sort of moral obligation to show the industry how a sports watch was made, they decided to label these characteristics as the series name. If you agree on their pioneer ship regarding sports watches or not – these are definitely important aspects when it comes to this concept.

The new Alpiner 4 Automatic
Now, several years later, Alpina presents us three new Alpiner 4 Automatic watches. If I’m honest, it is not the most sporty watch I have ever seen. That’s not negative though, I really like the design. It would be a great dress watch too, if it weren’t for the diameter (44mm). What I really like is the fact that this rather buff looking watch doesn’t present itself that way. All the elements that can be found in the design match perfectly. The dial comes in three different colours, glacier blue, black and a silver looking one. Which dial you prefer is a matter of personal taste, but in my opinion the one with the glacier blue dial is the most sporty one. Being the fact that it isn’t a very common dial colour and the strap has red stitching. All of these additions come with a genuine leather strap. I do not really know why brands keep using the word ‘genuine’ when they talk about their straps.. As if someone is looking for a watch in that price range and is surprised by a high quality leather strap. Like buying a Ferrari with flat tires, because it doesn’t come with ‘genuine rubber tires’. Anyhow, nice straps Alpina! Good job, I’m surprised.

These three news models carry the automatic AL-525 movement. A robust movement you will also find in the ‘Extreme Diver’ and the ‘Extreme 40’ series. A fairly recognisable movement and very reliable. All of them are water resistant up to 10ATM or 100m and have 38 hour power reserve. Coming in a stainless steel case of 44mm and with a ‘genuine’ leather strap with red stitching.

The new Alpiner 4 GMT ‘Business Timer’
The new Alpiner 4 GMT ‘Business Timer’ is available in two different styles. One with a black dial and one with a silver looking dial. In my humble opinion the watch would be a tad bit cooler without the ‘pepsi’ colour scheme, but that may be the reason I’m not head design at the Alpina workplace. Anyhow, it features the addition of red and blue on the 24h scale, something you may or may not like. The watch has the recognisable ‘Alpiner 4’ sports look and works with a AL-550 movement. This jumping hour movement makes it possible to adjust the second time zone really easy. A smart move of Alpina since most customers always look for an easy-to-handle GMT. After all, you don’t buy a watch to become a rocket scientist. As far as measurements go, the GMT features the same numbers as the other three ‘normal’ sports watches.

Overall, great additions to a series that has earned its stripes over the years. Alpina fans were glad when the series got revived back in 2014 and this is another sign the men and women in Geneva aren’t planning to quit this one.
