A new Lange & Sohne

We all know Lange as a brand that’s at the top of the ladder, regarding quality, finishing and complications. Their new 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst is no different. Once again Lange gives us a watch with extraordinary quality and a beautiful complication. A watch that looks a bit classy – maybe to busy for most of us – but still appeals to modern-day standard. What’s so special about this specific model is the fact that Lange introduces us to a very deep blue enamel dial as well as cuvette.

You might know the watch as the one winning a couple of prices at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie back in 2013. It’s is this exact same watch that’s the basis for this new piece of artistic haute cuisine. If you like it or not, it has to be said that the combination of engravings as well as enamel is one we don’t see that often. Therefore it deserves a little more attention than the average watch news. It’s is hard to describe what’s most appealing (for me most definitely the complications), but you could check out the pictures and see for yourself.

Blue side of the moon

As you see in a split second, the watch makers, designers and engravers over at A. Lange & Sohne adore the moon. A lot. The whole watch is some kind of fanclub for moon fanatics and astronauts. At the dial, we see the moonphase at 6 o’clock. The moonphase has the same blue enamel as the rest of the dial. However, the rest of the dial has – besides a few twinkly stars – a few dots too. I refer to them as ‘dots’, since I have no clue what they are. I guess it’s Lange’s way of giving your imagination some space. I would call it space-snow.

Luna sitting on your wrist

On the backside, as a protection for the sapphire case-back, we see Goddess Luna. She’s the mythological embodiment of our moon. Engraved in the cuvette, she’ll be sitting on your wrist most of the time not seeing much of the moon, holding her torch and wearing a moon-shaped diadem. Exactly as the mythology states and perfectly fitting in the theme of this watch. Surrounded by a see of blue enamel, existing out of stars and clouds.

I’m always in doubt when I see a watch with these kind of design aspects. Of course, a cuvette comes in very handy if you drag your crazy expensive Lange across the floor and want to keep the case-back nice and smooth. Then again, you’re probably not dragging it across the floor and you’ll be as drooling as me when seeing that marvelous movement. Thus my doubts about this cuvette. I would steel the show with that movement, each and every single day.

The A. Lange & Sohne 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst comes with a rattrapante movement. You’ll probably know what it means, but for those who dont: this movement caries a split-second chronograph, which enables the wearer to measure lap times and consecutive times. Two different column wheels assure that timekeeping is as strived for. One operates the chronograph, the other one operates the rattrapante mechanism.

As for the Perpetual Calendar, this will keep doing its job correctly until the year 2100 – that includes leap years. Fancy fun fact for generations to come, so make sure your Lange survives long enough to proof its reliability. Besides that, the moonphase (the one at 6 o’clock as we said earlier) is calibrated to work correctly for exact 122.6 years. Not really sure if that .6 ends at the beginning or ending of that particular point.

This extremely complicated and limited package is manually wound. If done correct, it would mean your watch will work its ass off for about 42 hours. If you’re afraid of losing control and power, no worries, a power reserve indicator shows you when to flick your wrist again. The subdials are made out of white gold and the chronograph hand is made out of gold-plated steel. Which – in my opinion – gives the watch a very nice contrast at dial side.

The case of the watch is also white gold and measures a modest 41.9mm in diameter. It comes on a blue/gray alligator leather strap with a white gold deployment buckle. If you want one, make sure to be quick because only 20 of these blued beauties will be made. Absolutely 10 points when it comes to understand the words limited edition.
